Just got back from orientation for my youngest son going into Kindergarten. We are allowed to drop him off at school up to 30 minutes before school starts, but all kids must play outside unless they are part of the breakfast program. The exceptions to this rule are 3 weather scenarios: steady rain, lightning in the area, and if the temperature/wind chill is below....-10 degrees F . Yes, negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Otherwise “we expect you to send you children dressed for the weather”.

Kinja'd!!!

Green Bay is the 16th coldest city in the country. Personally, anything above 15 degrees is light jacket weather unless I’ll be outside for extended periods of time. -20 to -30 windchills are not that uncommon, so - 10 wind chill is not all that crazy.  Should be a good year!

Our elementary school (a little farther south in WI) had a standing order to have indoor recess if it was raining, or the temp was below 10F.

SOOOOOOOOOFT

I grew up in Milwaukee and have no recollection about a minimum temperature.  Only rain, etc.

Ohio State, unless Urban Meyer gets shitcanned .  But I’m a Buckeye, the Badgers can pound sand.

When I lived in Madison, 25°F was generally the point at which I’d start considering putting on my warmest coat. But above that I’d usually stick with my fleece-lined shell.

Your children are far harder than I suspect the schools will expect out of our children. It rarely gets down below freezing here, and they’ll call off school for any amount of snow.

But is that because the kids are getting softer, or because parents are making these demands of schools now? I doubt that the kindergarten students were demanding indoor recess, but their parents probably were. Sounds like the parents are the ones getting soft.

Yeah, well, in the San Francisco Bay Area, anything below 40 degrees above zero is an arctic weather event. I like things that way. And cars don’t rust much...

So did I. Back in my day, we walked uphill in 2 feet of snow b oth ways with old bread bags tied to our feet to keep our socks dry because our moon boots weren’t Scotch-Guarded.

Yup, a fleece like that is my go-to “jacket” for walking between the car and work/home/stores, etc. 25 though?  That’s refreshing sweatshirt weather!

Other than walking uphill both ways, that statement really isn’t an exaggeration.  Those moon boots were not even close to water proof.  And they never seemed to dry out.

what you weren’t chased by gangs of wild dogs to and from school? Pft, must have been nice living the easy life..

I wouldn’ t mind that either, but anything above 80 degrees is miserable for me.

Agreed, u nless it’s seriously windy, 25F is more like light winter jacket weather.

Same. Rarely warmer than the 80s here and nearly always below 70 at night. We’re in the Eastbay.

We don’t really get school called off for snow. It has to be coming down REALLY hard to call off school. Our plows can run for 12 hours straight before they take a break, so basically a snow storm would have to last longer than that, and drop more snow per hour than the plows can keep up with. We only had one storm like that last winter, and it was in April! Mostly, schools get called off for extreme cold (-45 degree wind chill yo!) or ice. Otherwise, just get behind a plow truck and M ad-M ax your ass to school.

Usually if it was around 25 and I’d just be going in and out of the office or errands or whatever, I’d stick with the shell but I’d combine it with a hat (very necessary for my bald self) and gloves.

There are things I miss about Madison but I’m happy to be done with  winters there.

But the summers there!  I just need a winter place down south for Feb-April.

No doubt the parents. Read up about Scandinavian countries letting kids nap outside in strollers in winter. I was actually shocked that our district had such a low temp limit.

Sounds like my childhood. But I don't remember a minimum temp. Half the reason for going to school was building a snow fort back then!

My school’s policy was and still is that it’s totally okay to be outside down to around -30°F or so. -40 windchill. -40 or -50°F windchill was when busses got cancelled and they started suggesting kids shouldn’t be walking to school. -50°F or -60°F windchill was when they shut it down completely.

On bad years they start talking about extending the last day due to the number of days missed.

I live in the hottest city in the US and my kids school doesn’t have any sort of restrictions  for hot days. Just says they get water breaks for outdoor activities lasting more than thirty minutes. When I was in high school football practice started in August and we played baseball all summer. We had a lineman who I’m pretty sure had heat exhaustion every practice. So much puke.

That is so the local news, they’re not happy unless a light dusting can be redefined as a Class 3 Winter Kill Storm.

This is still the all-time classic from around here:
